Causes of Sensations in Your Feet

While many people will experience a harmless tingling sensation in their feet at some point in their life, in some cases this may be a sign of a potentially serious underlying condition.  Neuropathy, or a loss of sensation that commonly occurs in the extremities due to diabetes, can cause a tingling sensation in the feet or even numbness.  A number of infections, such as AIDS, leprosy, Lyme disease, and others, can cause a tingling sensation in the feet.  Pregnancy can also cause sensation loss or a "pins and needles" feeling in the feet.  The list of potential causes is large, with some including toxin exposure, alcoholism, vitamin deficiency, vasculitis, and others.  Due to the wide array of potential causes, it is advised that you see a podiatrist who can properly diagnose the cause and provide treatment.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Yeon A. Shim from Roselle Podiatry Group. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Roselle, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Stretches to Help Your Feet

The feet bear the weight of the body and are very complex, containing many bones, tendons, and muscles. The burden of this weight may contribute to pain in the feet and may also result in foot conditions such as bunions, fallen arches, and cramping muscles. Stretching the muscles by doing foot exercises may help in reducing tension. Some exercises include performing toe lifts, which can aid in strengthening the foot and help to prevent injuries. Another exercise technique is to pick up marbles with your toe one at a time, placing them in a small bowl. This may help with plantar fasciitis and injuries to the big toe. An Achilles stretch is also helpful in stretching and relaxing the muscles of the calf, resulting in an easier ability to flex the feet. Massaging the feet does not only prevent muscle sprains and spasms, but may help to increase circulation as well.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, Dr. Yeon A. Shim of Roselle Podiatry Group. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Roselle, NJ. We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Do Your Child's Feet Hurt?

Have your child's feet been examined lately? Healthy feet are happy feet. If your child is complaining of foot pain, it may be a sign of underlying problems.

Making Sure Your Children Have Good Footwear

Children have delicate feet, so it is very important to make sure that they have footwear that is right for them. This is not an easy task, however, as children often put more emphasis on style over practicality. Furthermore, children’s feet can grow pretty quickly, which means that shoes that aren’t that old may not fit them anymore. Poorly fitted shoes can cause foot conditions like hammertoes, blisters, heel pain, and can make trips and falls more likely. To help prevent this, measure your children’s feet regularly to make sure they still fit in their shoes. There should about a thumb’s worth of space between the toes and the front of the shoe. Make sure there is room for their toes to move around freely, while the rest of the shoe should be snug to prevent shoes from slipping off. Finally, children’s shoes should be breathable and should offer some flexibility near the toes while remaining rigid near the heel; they should still be supportive and comfortable. A podiatrist can help to measure your children’s feet and help provide tips on what to look for in shoes.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Yeon A. Shim from Roselle Podiatry Group. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.
